I’m inspired by the marshes of the Lowcountry. I mean, who isn’t?
I’ve never really thought about that before, but not only do I love seeing the water, but the cool greens and blues are serene and calming. So, as I thought about this collection, it is as much about the color as the subject matter. I’ve always loved being outdoors, and I can’t believe this is all in my backyard!
My grandmother, (we called her Granny at her request) loved Elvis.
I remember her Blue Christmas album playing on the record player when we celebrated Christmas Eve at her house. In the hot summer, she did puzzles at her kitchen table with the sound of ‘Love Me Tender’ in the background. I’m pretty sure she had even visited Graceland.

The collection of Marshes is about a dream. I’m not sure what my grandmother dreamed of. Still, I think she hoped for a glimpse of the Hollywood magic she saw in his movies, which we would watch on TV trays while we ate grilled cheese and tomato soup (still my favorite) or a bowl of ice cream.

These marshes are about dreams of faraway places, peaceful days, and good times in nature. Each has a different color palette, but I did that by choice. You know, sometimes the water looks deep blue and sometimes it’s a lighter color. The light varies depending on how the sun hits the marsh or whether it is spring or fall.

I know Elvis never lived on a marsh, but I love the juxtaposition of those dreams that he made come true with our need for peace, clarity, and hope for the future.
A little water, a little music, and life seems better.
Music has always been a part of my life, from my grandmother’s records to my Spotify playlist and everything in between.
