'Island Song' has lots and lots of layers and texture.
A couple of years ago my husband Joe and I went to Hawaii for our 25 wedding anniversary. This painting was inspired by photos I took while we were there.
We sat outside at this restaurant in Maui, looking at the deep blue Pacific, drinking Mai Tais and listening to a local musician sing beautiful Hawaiian music.
Influenced by the lush landscape and color of the Hawaiian Islands, I began painting this piece by using lots of oranges and pinks, but it needed a cooler, richer feel so I kept adding layers and changing the colors until I was happy with the result. I think it reflects the natural beauty of this gorgeous place. I can almost hear the ukulele music. Damn, I want to go back.
